The usual December drop was less than usual
June, July, August and December are generally our slow months. It's an online trend much like in North American television: when people are on vacation or enjoying holidays with family and friends, they are less likely to spend time in front of a TV set or computer monitor. Our download statistics have gone down from the previous month every December that we have been online.
But meanwhile our figures, and the chart above, are somewhat distorted by our expansion into audio. When we started the new feature in November we nearly ran out of bandwidth until we put the Wappin' Radio Show on another server, so that explains the huge November spike in kilobytes represented by the red bars, which of course is not being repeated. When you look at the yellow and orange bars, the number of visits actually went up in December while the number of people visiting, and hits, page views and the number of files downloaded --- went down a bit. The difference seems mostly to be the new category of people who have become regular listeners of the radio show podcast.
October, with its canal expansion referendum, revelations that the government had been poisoning patients with tainted medications and bus fire that killed 18 people, was an unusual news month and it shows. But January, with the Panama Jazz Festival, and February, with Carnival, promise also to boost readership again if previous years are any indication.
The Panama News publishes its download statistics partly as a matter of good faith to our advertisers and potential advertisers and also as a matter of principle in an industry where journalists take bribes and media owners overstate their readerships and viewerships and consider any competitor who refuses to play that game a pendejo.
