Boquete Jazz Festival, February 2-4

Boquete will be flooded with jazz lovers

The Earth of the flowers and the coffee will be flooded, but with Jazz, from February 2 - 4 with the First Boquete Jazz Festival, a cultural event intended to promote Boquete in the province of Chiriquí in the Rep. of Panama as a cultural destiny; music, the plastic arts and the scenic arts, which can turn Boquete to a center that attracts creative people from all parts of the world.

Some artists have made Boquete their residence. Classical guitarist Francisco Velasquez, for example, has found in Boquete the inspiration to transmit his knowledge to hundreds of young people through the Gatma Group, which gives free lessons in the ancient style of teacher and apprentice.

Velasquez and his Group Orquestal Gatma will be part of the first Boquete Jazz Festival, at the February 4 concert in Domingo Medica Park, which is Boquete’s central square.

This first version of the festival will be dedicated to saxophonist Carlos Garnett.

The participation of local groups like Los Intelectuales, the Blue Note Jazz Quartet, Dubarran’s Jazz Trio and Tropical Jazz will give to the festival a different touch from already established Panama Jazz Festival, where great artists of the world jazz scene participate. The international touch at this event will be given by Gianni Bardaro and his quintet, from Copenhagen, Denmark.

The event also includes an exhibition by outstanding plastic artists who have united to mount a collective show in honor to the Maestro Carlos Garnett and which has named Panamoon Live, in reference to one of the pieces in Garnett’s Resurgence album. Manuel Montilla, who coordinates the collective, will give a painting to Maestro Garnett in his honor. Three outstanding Chiricano artists have donated their works to be raffled at the festival.

The new residents of Boquete are refurnishing the old Cumbre Theaterwhich will be one of the scenes of the festival, for plays and cultural events.

Those interested attending the Boquete Jazz Festival can get tickets in Boquete at Bistro Opening and OASIS B&B, in David at Cocina Rica, in Volcán at Pharmacy Don Bosco, and in Bocas at Super Gourmet.
