Dry season oasis

The little artificial waterfall is a popular feature of country living in Panama. When everything around it turns brown during dry season, a cascada dug into a hillside and equipped with a pump attracts birds and animals but keeps the water circulating to avoid the creation of a mosquito breeding spot. Water plants that are grown in such systems can also be composted into some topsoil that's very good for the garden. Photo by Eric Jackson
