Not entirely demilitarized
This hangar at Albrook used to be used by the Inter-American Air Force Academy (IAAFA), through which the United States trained Latin American Air Force officers for many years. Although the US military pulled out of Albrook in 1999, the old logo has not been completely painted over.
Theoretically, the building has been taken over for civilian business activities by Bell Helicopters and Korea Air. But just after this picture was taken, on the other side of the building there were parked on the tarmac two airplanes bearing the markings of Evergreen Air of Alaska, and there was also an Evergreen helicopter in the hangar.
Evergreen Air of Alaska, not to be confused with the Taiwanese Evergreen shipping company, now plays the role that Air America used to play in the Vietnam War era. It's a "civilian contractor" hired by the US Department of Defense to do logistical support for both US military and US-hired mercenary forces taking part in Colombia's civil war as part of "Plan Colombia."
Evergreen Air of Alaska does other things for the US Armed Forces Southern Command as well. Despite the US military withdrawal from the former Canal Zone, the United States retains a treaty commitment to defend the Panama Canal and at the time the company's aircraft were seen at Albrook the US Army National Guard was conducting engineering and medical maneuvers in Panama's Bocas del Toro province.
