Bocas runs dry, US Army comes to the rescue

Rainy season was a bit longer and dryer than usual this year, and when you compound that with a big influx of foreign retirees and tourists to the Bocas del Toro islands that has been unmatched by infrastructure improvements, the result is the reservoir that supplies Bocas town's water supply running dry as shown above. A serious public health catastrophe was averted when the US Army National Guard, which had engineering and medical units in the province for regularly scheduled maneuvers at the time, lent the use of a portable water desalinization plant to give the town potable water from the Caribbean Sea. Now that the rainy season's first precipitation has come, there is a reasonable expectation that nature will refill the reservoir. During the crisis President Torrijos came to Bocas to promise improvements to the roads and sewer system, which are needed even if the unaddressed infrastructure problem of the moment was water.
