Patronato de Nutricion

Auction of Fine Art by Panamanian painters

We would like to extend you a special invitation to attend our Fine Art Auction of Panamanian Painters, Thursday, May 17, 2007, at the Grand Ballroom of the Miramar Intercontinental Hotel, at 8:00 p.m.

Some of the participants are Manuel Chong Neto, Carlos Arboleda, Ivan Delgado, Guillermo Trujillo and Gaenor Speed, who have donated valuable fine art for this auction.

The contribution for this event is $10, which includes admission and the cheese and wine. In addition, when you acquire one of these precious fine arts, you not only get an article of great value for an excellent price, but also contribute to our organization, which helps many Panamanians who live in extreme poverty to be healthier and better nourished.

The Patronato de Nutricion is a special non-profit organization, created by Law 17, November 19, 1990, in the Republic of Panama. Our main goal is to improve the diets of infants, children and pregnant or breast-feeding mothers.

We execute programs looking for a permanent solution of the nutritional problem through our special project called “Sustained Production Farms,” where the farmers learn techniques to grow their own products while maintaining responsibility in their own hands.

A “Production Farm” is an area in a region of extreme poverty, where the unification of agro-cattle production is desired; where the agriculture, cattle and forestry are integrated with the purpose of making the farmers self-sustained through the maximum efficiency of existing resources. The products of the farms permit their members to obtain some of the basic food demands of a family and also, by selling the surplus, additional income to improve their lives.

NOTE: The paintings will be exhibited starting at 6:00 p.m. on the day of the event.

Editor's note: First, let us acknowledge that one ot the artists whose work is to be auctioned, impressionist painter Gaenor Speed, is a frequent contributor to The Panama News, in many ways.

Second, notice that even if you --- like the editor of The Panama News --- are not in a financial position to bid on this art, you can pay your $10, sip the wine and nibble the cheese, SEE good art and meet a number of the country's creative talents, and have the satisfaction of knowing that your small donation is going to a worthy cause.

Third, a comment on the news: it's a tragedy when anybody dies before his or her time, and in the USA, particularly on Fox News, just about all of the news from Panama has been about the particulary gory murder of an American woman. That network, and unfortunately too many members of the American community down here, have not treated the recent death from malnutrition of at least one child and probably several others in the indigenous areas of the Darien as particularly worthy of notice. But hunger that kills is usually far more destructive than anger that kills --- for each child who starves to death many others acquire learning disabilities or have their growth stunted by the same malnutrition, and that affects the nation's development for decades to come. There are only a few organizations that are doing very much to address the hunger issue in Panama, and the Patronato de Nutricion is one of them. So come on out and support this worthy cause.
