More readers, more visits than ever before
Lies about readership, although they are designed to defraud advertisers, are not treated as illegal here in Panama and they are widely practiced.
There's a guy out there who claims to have an English-language website featuring news about Panama that has more readers than The Panama News. But to test that, just go to the Google search engine, punch in the key work "Panama" and see which English-language news website comes up first.
The Panama News is, in fact, by far the principal English-language news site from and about Panama.
In April we had an extraordinary readership boom, but there are a couple of things that a discerning potential advertiser should know. One is that on Earth Day a very widely read website pointed a link at us for an Earth Day story we did several years ago and we got more than 10,000 visits on that day alone, far more than we have ever registered in a 24-hour period --- but they went to that specific page in the archives rather than reading the issue of The Panama News that was current at the time. The other is that in the last issue we had a community page thing about Falun Gong doing their exercises and meditations in Parque Omar, and a lot of people from around the world visited us to see that page alone. (We wonder how many people were willing or able to view it from China, where Falun Gong is banned and the Internet heavily censored.)
Despite those caveats, we are running at more than 3,000 visits per day and our regular readership is steadily climbing.
