The man on the bullhorn was controversial radio journalist Blas Julio. The banners identified most of the groups that have been involved in the protests against Ocean Embassy's proposal to capture wild dolphins in Panamanian waters --- Catholic animal welfare groups, environmentalists and so on --- but none of these goups turned out their rank-and-file on this day. The usual campus radicals were generally not there, but in the crowd there were the Bolivarian journalism students, a delegation of philosophy majors and other unmasked student activists.
Along the way there were many expressions of support from drivers passing by and people on the sidewalks or the balconies of their apartments. Polls show an overwhelming majority of Panamanians against the capture of dolphins. The issue is not, however, at the top of very many citizens' list of concerns.
This June 2 march was designed to register the groups' concerns with the international press corps that was in town for the OAS General Assembly and with some of the diplomats staying at the Miramar or hotels along the march route. Dolphins were not on the summit agenda, which was concerned with energy issues.
The march went from the University of Panama to Avenida Balboa
