Beccaria on Torture
http://www.crimetheory.com/Archive/Beccaria/Beccaria16.htm
As a 26-year-old Italian activist during
the 17th Century Enlightenment, Cesare Beccaria, based on information from
an official in Milan's prison system and a legal historian who
collaborated with him on this work, wrote this essay that eventually led
the legal systems of the western world to reject the use of torture.
Despite the strenuous efforts of men like George W. Bush to revive
Medieval practices in the daily functions of modern nations' governments,
Beccaria's arguments are still generally accepted as valid, even if
torture remains a widespread criminal practice.
Iraq Veterans
Against the War

One of the important political
differences between the Vietnam War and the Iraq War is the nature of the
US military. In Vietnam most of the grunts were draftees who did their
year in the war and were out of the service shortly thereafter, and thus
free to join in the antiwar movement. Today's volunteer military has
disillusioned veterans of the Iraq War still on active duty or with the
guard or reserves and thus still subject to military discipline and
political censorship. Even wounded veterans are often being cheated out of
their benefits and kept on the rolls so as to conceal the true dimensions
of the disaster into which the Washington politicians have led their
country, to the point that the families of soldiers killed in action have
received orders for their departed loved ones to report for another tour
of duty in Iraq. Thus the Iraq War veteran who joins the protest movement
usually takes a much greater risk than did the members of Vietnam Veterans
Against the War. Still, the veterans' protest grows....

WWF on Tourism and

The Torrijos administration seems bound
and determined to copy the worst mistakes made in the Mediterranean and
South Florida --- with extra added twists of Panamanian corruption and
oligarchic power --- but on this page the World Wildlife Fund explains the
destructive, even self-destructive, nature of prevailing mass tourism
models.
