Janet Levi's utilitarian art

photos by Eric Jackson

Most of the Panamanian artists who paint bateas --- wooden trays --- copy the abstract designs of the pre-Columbian Coclean culture.

Janet Levi, a Pennsylvania native who has lived most of her life in Panama, was educated as an architect here and raised her children as Panamanians. One of her kids is noted furniture and cabinet maker --- a wood sculptor, really --- David Levi, some of whose better work can be seen at the Weil Art gallery.

Janet also does bateas, which she describes as "utilitarian art," but not the knock-offs of traditional designs. These photos were taken of some of the work she displayed at the USA Travel Expo at the Sheraton.
