March about economic issues changes tone after workers killed

photos by Eric Jackson

The August 16 FRENADESO march from Plaza Porras to the Presidencia was originally called to protest the proposed US-Panama free trade treaty and a number of economic issues facing Panamanian working people. But the August 14 picket line slaying by a hit man for Odebrecht of one of the SUNTRACS construction workers union leaders in Colon, Osvaldo Lorenzo, and then the August 16 slaying of unarmed SUNTRACS member Luigi Argüelles by the National Police at Isla Viveros turned the march into a somber affair.

At at least three places along the march route, police allowed traffic to drive into the parade in a departure from usual practices. Their boss, Government and Justice Minister Olga Gólcher, had predicted violence and apparently her subordinates were  trying to make the prophesy come true. There was no violence.
