contact smithn@stri.org

This is not a website as such, but an email list run by Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute scientist emeritus Neal Smith that follows many of the cutting edges of the sciences. He pays particular attention to work that STRI people are doing, but those are but a small percentage of his mailings as he goes into many fields of scientific inquiry and surveys the major scientific journals.

Vidas Eternas

http://vidaseternas.net

Eternal life? It's the basic promise of Christianity, Islam and the Faust legend. Believe it when you see it --- but then the dilemma is that according to the scriptures you don't get to see it unless you believe it. Ah, but the memory of the departed lives on, and this Panamanian website helps families and friends preserve the memories of their late loved ones on the World Wide Web.

Wiki Scanner

http://wikiscanner.virgil.gr/

Virgil, a 24-year-old computer whiz, has invented this program that allows you to find out which corporations and government types have been manipulating entries on the Wikipedia "people's encyclopedia." The Panama Canal Authority, mostly through its lobbyist Edelman, is one of the worst erasers of truth and spreaders of disinformation. You have read on Wikipedia how much safer the Panama Canal is under Alberto Alemán Zubieta's administration? That common myth is one example of how Panama's political elite misuses public funds. The ACP has spent our money and hired folks like Edelman to spread a statistical lie. Under the US administration, every time a ship touched a wall or gate in the locks, it was counted as an accident and report had to be filed. Under the ACP the procedure was changed so that only incidents in which an insurance claim will be filed are counted as accidents, and moreover there would be an extra delay of about eight hours in canal waters to go through the motions of an accident report, which of course ensures that only accidents where there are serious damages are worth reporting, as a delay in arrival at the destination also involves costs. The ACP dishonestly compares statistics gathered under the American system with those gathered under the new system to "prove" its superior management and "justify" the more than a million bucks a year that Alemán Zubieta gets in pay and perks. Pretty slick --- if you happen to be a fourth-grader. But then, lazy journalists and politicians around the world have endlessly repeated the lie resulting from the ACP's sophomoric statistical shell game, and the ACP and its hired flacks keep the myth alive on Wikipedia.
