A raccoon, known as a mapache in Spanish. A lot of these have lived for a very long time in the Punta Paitilla and Punta Pacifica area, but some exceptionally sick person has been poisoning them. The animals are also common in other wooded areas of our capital.

Animals you might

see around the city

A ñeque in both Spanish and Panamanian English, but an agouti in foreign dialects of English. The higher you go on Ancon Hill, the more of these you will see. The Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute's little arboretum at the Tupper Center --- on the site of the old Tivoli Hotel --- is home to several of these, as are most other wooded areas of Panama City.
