The turkey vulture, or pavon in Panamanian Spanish, has a soft beak. The meat it eats thus needs to be softened by decomposition or otherwise. Panama's embrace of wildlife protection has been late in coming and quite often lukewarm, but this country has long protected its scavengers. Back when we were a rural society, Panamanians well knew how bad things would smell with a dead horse or other farm animal nearby and no vultures to clean up the mess. Photo by Eric Jackson
