few days of its November 1821 independence from Spain Panama threw in
its lot with
Venezuelan-born revolutionary Simón
Bolívar, who after several defeats had
come back to oust the Spaniards from much of South America, and joined
his Gran Colombia. The Bolivarian republics
include Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia and Panama. Bolívar was a
complicated man and today a lot of Latin Americans with very different
ideas consider themselves Bolivarians
