Bejuco fixer-uppers Compared to California or New York, housing prices in Panama are still a bargain. However, if you think that you can find prime beach front property at a few pennies per square meter, you are either a member or relative of the political class or your dreams are not well connected with reality. Still, there are deals to be had. Might this shell of a house on the Pan-American Highway on Bejuco be such a deal? Probably not. As a physical reality, it could probably be rebuilt into a pretty little house. That this has not happened is probably an indication that the structure encroaches onto a public right-of-way and thus that it can't be legally owned. Then there are people who live on their boats. That may not be so cheap as one might imagine, and not only due to the old maxim that a boat is a hole in the water into which one pours money. There is a concerted effort, aided by the government, by a few politically connected individuals to control the marina business so one is seeing higher fees to anchor or dock a boat than previously applied. Then there is the matter of many marinas being high-crime areas, where thieves will strip your valuables off of your boat while you are away. Still, if you're looking to buy a fixer-upper boat, the one shown below is for sale, along the Pan-American Highway in Bejuco not far from the shell of the house shown above. This vessel is of a model more typically used for small-scale commercial fishing than for residential purposes, but title is probably not a problem. Photos by Eric Jackson
