Day of the Martyrs march

Day of the Martyrs

January 9 was the Day of the Martyrs, the anniversary of several days in January of 1964 in which 27 people were killed over an argument that started about the subject of which flag or flags would fly over the old Canal Zone. It's a controversial historical subject, starting with which of the fallen should be counted as martyrs for their respective countries --- four of those who died were US soldiers, the rest Panamanians, and not all of the latter who died were participating in a political protest when they met their fates.

There were several observances on January 9, and the legal holiday was switched to the previous Monday, January 7, in a legislative move that the tourism industry wanted but not all Panamanians liked. This was a leftist march that began near the Instituto Nacional.
