How to tell a climate phenomenon's gender

Is it a boy or is it a girl? If you're talking about trends in the weather, look at the surface temperatures of the waters of the central and eastern tropical Pacific Ocean. La Niña, which we are seeing at the moment, features colder water in that area, as shown below. El Niño, conversely, is characterized by warmer temperatures. It's easy enough to see if you have the right kind of satellite and accessories.
