Dear Dr. Mutt,

This is my first time at the polls, and I’m in a quandary as to how to vote. How can I plow through so many promises? Whom should I believe? What must I do?

Dear Perplexed,

Begin by listening carefully, not only to what the candidates are saying, but how they are saying it. Read about them. Look at their records. What have they done in the past? How generous are they with their own money? Draw up a pros and cons column for each one. You’d be surprised at how helpful this is to see if they’ve been good dogs or not. Then vote as your conscience dictates.
