The Meridith March (A Day in 1968)

On the road to Batesville
we followed our feet
With dreams of freedom's promise
strangers passing strangers
as cultures redefine themselves
shearing hate from its thoughts,
we were like sheep
between the gauntlets
dumb to the taunts
determined in the hope
that children would wear the vestments.

Each hate displayed in concret forms-
bottles flung to message Never
the 'N' word delivered in a strangled rage
as if given at once by every ancester,
the middle finger gestured by gentility:
a minister, a policeman, a barber

The Old South turned to new
was happening all at once-

In a flash, a little boy ran to a woman
at the edge of her antebellum home
to the site of her obscene defiance,
his hands on his hips:

"Just look at your se'ff,
the flower of Southern Womanhood."
