Local man wins a piece of an Oscar

Robert Smith, right, poses with Bill Westenhofer, the visual effects supervisor at Rhythm & Hues, with the Oscar that the company won for visual effects in The Golden Compass. The company also won the special effects award from the British Academy of Film and Television Arts for the same work.

Rhythm & Hues created realistic animal "daemons" for the film and worked on the film's climactic battle scenes. It was a team effort, the work of some 500 artists in the United States and India.

Smith, a Panama native and the son of Ralph and Clarita Thayer Smith, works with Rhythm & Hues in Los Angeles and was part of the artistic team that created the Oscar-winning effects in The Golden Compass.
