Meanwhile in Casco Viejo...

Amidst the ruins of the old Hotel Central, digging is now underway. This is one way to try to retrofit one of the city's historical architectural landmarks --- the Hotel Central that had long been in ruins --- in order to create underground parking. The site is not far from the presidential palace.

Some neighborhood activists don't think that this is a good idea, either because they worry about the digging weakening nearby structures or because they think that developing the Casco Viejo to accommodate more cars is an unwelcome change to the old neighborhood's character.

The Casco Viejo is Panama's second colonial city, built after  Henry Morgan's raid on Panama Viejo, but most of the colonial era architecture was destroyed in the 18th and 19th century by a series of major fires. Now it's something of a chic cultural and tourism hotspot, and the site of a gentrification process that's opposed by area residents who don't care to be forced out.
