Sunrise over Paitilla photos by Eric Jackson From behind the construction sites of Punta Pacifica, dawn peeps over the horizon. A few minutes later, the sun is up over the Pacific Ocean. Huh? Isn't the sun supposed to rise in the east and set in the west? Isn't the sun supposed to come up over the Caribbean Sea and set over the Pacific Ocean? Ah, but look at a good map of Panama. The canal runs roughly north and south. The isthmus curves along a roughly east-west axis. Thus Panama is one of those places where you can see the sun rise over the Pacific, take a relatively short drive during the day, and see the sun go down over the Caribbean Sea as that night approaches.
