Historical Society meets April 2
Dr. Vicente Bayard on Panamanian medical history 100 years of yellow fever / dengue surveillance The
next PHS meeting will take place on Wednesday April 2nd at
Niko's in Balboa, at 7:30 p.m. Our speaker will be Dr. Vicente
Bayard, currently (since 1999) Chief Epidemiologist at Gorgas
Memorial Institute in Panama City and also (since 1992) Professor of
Epidemiology at the University of Panama. His topic: "100 Years
of Yellow Fever/Dengue Surveillance in Panama: Lessons Unattended."
The public is invited, and there is no admission charge.
Dr. Bayard graduated from Instituto Justo Arosemena in Panama City in 1969 and has acquired advanced degrees at Universidad Federal de Rio Grande do Sul in Brazil (MD - 1974); the School of Public Health in Mexico DF (MPH -1980); University of Wisconsin/Madison (MSc Epidemiology - 1989). Dr.
Bayard was also a Fulbright Fellow at Johns Hopkins School of Public
Health (1988 - 1999). His career in public health in Panama began
in 1990. He is a member of several professional organizations, has
published a number of studies and, after completion of a study on
cost-effectiveness of educational intervention for HIV/AIDS
prevention for Panama schools, is currently working on research
related to the potential benefits of flavanoid-rich cocoa in
treatment of Type I hypertension.
