Cayuco racing season reaches its annual climax

photos by Eric Jackson

Cayuco racing started more than a half-century ago as a Zonian thing, originating as a challenge race through the canal from the Caribbean Sea to the Pacific Ocean within the Canal Zone chapter of the Boy Scouts of America. It has grown since then, and although there were fears that it might die after the 1999 reversion of the Panama Canal to complete Panamanian control, the event is bigger than ever.

The National Police had a band to encourage their boat

They weren't first across the line on the last heat, but Anacardium, below, won the male juvenile class.

Among the youngsters, Mis Chief took the female category and Almost won the mixed

Once again, the maleantes have been warned: don't try to outrun the police in a cayuco.

This time the National Police boat, Expreso Comando, was fastest in the mixed open class.

Snafu won the open men's category and Misbehavin won the open women's race

This section will be updated with the complete results shortly, but why not beat us to the place from whence we get those data anyway? The Balboa Paddle Club --- Club de Remo de Balboa --- post the results of the Ocean-to-Ocean Cayuco Race and the other events of the season on its website at http://www.cayucorace.org/
