Lili's in Bocas Town

The best fish sandwich around
review and photos by Eric Jackson

This reporter hasn't been been and won't be able to visit every restaurant in Panama --- not even half of them. Thus all superlatives have to be not only subjective as in all reviews, but highly personal as well.

With that caveat, let me say that Lili's Cafe in Bocas Town served me the best fish sandwich I have yet encountered in my years in Panama.

The menu didn't specify the species and I didn't ask the waitress or the cook, but I suspect that it was a grouper steak in between those two thick slices of medium-dark wholesome non-industrial bread, with the trimmings and the celebrated Killin' Me Man hot sauce.

This is a place about which I had heard, but only now had the pleasure to experience. And I'd say that this was just from the lunch menu --- except that this establishment closes before sundown. When one thinks about it, a restaurant that thrives on breakfast and lunch business only, and not in a particularly crowded urban setting, has to be recommended by just that business fact.
