US ambassador pays a visit to economically depressed Colon

So, on a visit to Colon, how does US Ambassador Bill Eaton weigh the balance between hope and despair?

"I see more hope than despair," he said. "There are a lot of possibilities for Colon. There's a high level of English. Colon could really grow."

In particular, he expects the building of the new Panama - Colon toll road to multiply local business opportunities. "Without that highway it's more difficult, but I see that project as huge and important."

More tourism may mean more wealth, but generally tourists are warned against going to this particular part of Colon city, and often against going to the Atlantic side at all
