Panama
City's construction boom
I was in Panama City for three weeks. I observed those high rise buildings already built and those in the process of construction. It's a replica of Miami during the construction boom three years ago. Also, no traffic lights in accord with the construction boom in effect; the infrastructure is a calamity. Summing up, I recognize that the Republic of Panama has potential to improve its decayed situation. Which could be attained by enforcing laws by national politicians who demand, in full, THE BEST FOR REPUBLIC OF PANAMA AND ITS POPULATION. Enough is Enough. Otherwise, the chaos will be worse than Miami. Thousands of real estate buyers there have been be forced to declare bankruptcy. Most new buildings in Miami's downtown are still empty. M.

Botched translation? Eric, I think "pollo de palo" is a "tree chicken." One of the Spanish words for tree is palo. As in "vez el loro en ese palo." Ray Editor's note: Ray has a good point, but then again, in Michigan where I lived for many years "out in the woods" was often expressed as "out in the sticks." My dictionaries call that a slang or colloquial usage, but the first meaning of "stick" as a noun in my Random House College Dictionary is "a branch or shoot from a tree or shrub" --- which, come to think of it, rather exactly describes the places where I tend to find iguanas. Hence "pollo de palo" as "stick chicken." But then I have to admit that Ray is far more perfectly bilingual than I am. A charming blacklisting note from Cable Onda Editor's Note: Emails sent to those readers of The Panama News who use Cable Onda as their Internet service provider and have signed up for the email list were blocked by Cable Onda, which is a subsidiary of MEDCOM (RPC radio and television, Telemetro, etc.). My response to the email address they provided went unanswered. It appears that someone who dislikes The Panama News --- I think I know who, but can't prove a thing except by circumstantial evidence of a long chain of similar acts --- has sent out spam under the false flag of other people's identities in order to get our webserver classified as a spam source. But then, MEDCOM / Cable Onda, a PRD-aligned media corporation, is the one playing along with this game. People should insist that they stop. And it seems that after a number of complaints to Cable Onda from people who were cut off from The Panama News email list, the company took us off their blacklist. The Cable Onda "blacklist" note was as follows: x@cableonda.net <mailto:x@cableonda.net> Technical details of permanent failure: PERM_FAILURE: Gmail tried to deliver your message, but it was rejected by the recipient domain. The error that the other server returned was: 591 591 x@... <mailto:x@cableonda.net> your host [209.85.132.246]

1.0 ------=_Part_22854_1295586.1211081269673 Ever more "seamless," production of volume 14, issue 10 is underway with the uploading of the editorial page: http://www.thepanamanews.com/pn/v_14/issue_10/editorial.html This time The Panama News urges people, institutions and governments not to feed the monsters, and distinguishes some rhetoric from some realities about global warming. Colon under a cloud Gasp! Hack! Wheeze! Sniffle! Cough! These are the sounds of respiratory distress that many residents these days on the Gold Coast of Panama are suffering. It is like an overnight industrial complex has moved in to Colon Province. The air is filthy. The fire still, after almost a week, smolders from the Colon Free Zone and is further saturated with the construction work dust from the never ending warehouse buildings. Endless trucks hauling fill from Cativa to Colon are filling the air with unchecked emissions belching out black smoke. The five-mile stretch from Cuarto Altos to the Rey Super market at the Sabinitas turnoff is like running a gauntlet of container and dump trucks and yes, those nasty Diablo Rojos that randomly stop in the middle of Trans-isthmian Highway to discharge or board passengers. Back that up with bumper to bumper traffic Monday through Friday --- people just trying to get to work and the Gold Coast, sure enough, has got a big problem. Check out the commercial incinerator located in the corner next to the Cristobal Yacht Club, Panama Railway and the Panama Ports --- again, random smoke of many colors filling the air and blowing into Colon, Arco Iris, Cristobal and Margarita --- depending which way the wind is blowing. Then there is the Mount Hope Dump smoldering 24 hours around the clock. The waste trucks are not even bothering to go into the dump --- the dump line starts in front of the original gate entry on the Pier 16 Road! A pallor of gray smoke, now that the dry season winds have come to an end, often settles in the town sites of Margarita and Arco Iris and it stinks! Now there are even further plans to pollute our towns and neighborhoods further with the construction of a thermal energy generator system. The protest signs are posted and the demonstrations by the opposition environmentalists trying to have a say about the air we and our children breath, have been made, but what will ultimately come of this proposal? If I were a betting Mon, I would say probably nothing, UNLESS.…… The communities need to get all those smiling faces running for office that are becoming plastered all over Colon Province to get involved, commit seriously before it is too late. Environment and Ecology are real issues, not just one of those problems of some other area far away. It is here, now, right now and I am sure our fellow countrymen living in the disaster area of Panama City’s Cerro Patacon and surrounding town sites can empathize. Politicos, it is very hip to deal with clear air, proper garbage disposal and environmental impact plans for the sections of which you are running for office. These are the issues that you, as an office holder, are responsible to deal with. Cut the rhetoric and give us some action. These are modern times and call for modern solutions. And yes, I realize these issues are more complicated than I know. I am just a guy looking for a breath of fresh air that we have always taken for granted here on the Atlantic Coast --- what do I know? Is this proverbial “price of progress” we must pay, like it or not? Sniffle… E.J. Berger
On Memorial Day, from an antiwar Vietnam veteran Editor's note: José F. Ponce, a Vietnam veteran who strongly objects to the Iraq War, sent in this flyer to express a point of view usually excluded from the official observances. When
a child asks: "If I enter the water, will sharks eat
me?"
As a parent, we want our children to spend time outdoors and learn about nature. But what happens when your child tells you they don't want to walk in the park because "the bears will eat me." Should your child be afraid and how should you deal with your child's fear? The real reality is that the total number of negative interactions between humans and apex predators has decreased significantly within the past 50 years. During this time the human population on the planet has more than doubled. Due to this human population explosion, the natural wildlife habitats and populations of poisonous reptiles, and almost all apex predators have decreased significantly. However, what has significantly increased during this time frame is the media reporting and nationwide coverage of almost every negative nature interaction. This increased media coverage provides the public with the perception that the attacks are occurring more often. Child psychologists insist that explaining comparison risks such as telling your child that riding in an airplane or a being struck by lightning is far more dangerous is the wrong approach to take. It does not address their fear and can instill additional fears and make your child afraid of riding in a plane or being struck by lightning. The specific fear the child expressed is the fear that needs to be addressed. So, how do you work with your child to address their fear? Start by discovering the answers to the following questions. What is the truth of their fear? Has there ever been a shark attack at this beach? Do dangerous sharks live in this area? If so, when do they feed? Are there any bears in this section of woods, etc.? What new behavior do we need to develop in order to confront this fear? It could be as simple as having the child walk between two adults. What beliefs block their desires and attempts to confronting their fear? Have they heard from friends that a lot of people have died walking in THOSE woods or swimming at THAT beach? How willing are they to try out new behavior? If you show them that a certain area is safe, would they be willing to accompany you into the same area? The overcoming fears tool box consists of: Handling irrational beliefs, self-affirmation, handling guilt and embarrassment, building trust, handling insecurity, letting go, stress reduction, spirituality, becoming a risk taker, and accepting change. Which of the "tools" available to overcome this fear would apply? Will saying a prayer work? How about addressing the embarrassment of others doing something they are afraid of? What new beliefs do they need to confront their fear? This includes the most basic belief, that they will not be eaten. It should also include the self-confidence that they have been "trained" to deal with how to safely be in this section of the beach or woods. Some other basic rules: 1. Don't lie about the actual risks or dangers. Never tell children bears and sharks are not dangerous. 2. Don't use this fear to correct other areas of bad behavior. An example would be telling your child "if you do not do what I told you, I will call a bear to come out of the woods and tell him to eat you. Yes, many parents actually do different variations of this, most popular one being "I'll get that policeman to arrest you." 3. Don't further reduce their self-esteem. They are already feeling guilt and/or embarrassment because of their fear so don't make things worse. 4. If as a parent you are unable to help your child, don't despair or give up, seek professional help. Call a licensed child psychologist and schedule an appointment for both you and your child. Freedom and its negation Editor's note: A couple of readers brought the following articles to my attention, a page from a Washington-based human rights organization's website about the US government's collaborative effort with China to torture and otherwise mistreat imprisoned dissidents of China's Uighur ethnic minority and a Rolling Stone article that, among other aspects of the subject, gets into US-based corporations' role in China's pervasive and growing espionage against its own citizens. This ought to take some of us back to that 60s classic paranoiac thriller / satire, The Manchurian Candidate --- the original, with Angela Lansbury's portrayal of the purest of evil manipulators, not the inferior remake --- and make us wonder whether Americans have already seen a more successful implementation of the film's underlying premise in real life. Revolution 4 Freedom Festival With the National Republican Convention a short time away and the warmongers having a upper hand we the People have to decide if we wish to continue with the Neo Conned mentality we have allowed to rule us into slavery and debt which we will never pay back in our lifetime. It is now time to make a decision which will affect our entire family life style. With all the talk of martial law, Real ID, NAFTA, the NAU, TRANS TEXAS CORRIDOR and OPEN BORDERS we as the people of this nation need to gather our strength and learn to say "NO MORE." A Revolution 4 Freedom Festival is being held in Sturgis, South Dakota, on July 2nd through July 6th. Please try to attend. Tell your friends, neighbors, groups, whoever. With the cost of fuel and other dire threats against our free movement in this country this may very well be the last time we all have the opportunity to meet with like minded people to plan and learn. We have wonderful speakers, workshops, seminars plus some of the best entertainment in the patriotic movement. This is a whole family event, games and fun for the kids while parents are busy, RV sites are available, tent campsites are free, the cabins are all rented out but there is a entire motel set aside in the town of Sturgis if you don't care to camp out. The camp is huge, well set up with lots of shade and stages along with vendors and modern clean restrooms and showers. See the website: www.revolution4freedom.com or www.grannywarriors.com for more details and don't forget to donate a few dollars to help us fund this huge event.
