A
Memorial Day weekend celebration of Panamanian (Afro-Caribbean)
alumni
Atlanta reunion of Rainbow
City High classes of '72
and '73by Rico Francis
On
May 23-26, 2008 more than 200 high school classmates, their spouses,
relatives and distant friends gathered for their 36th class reunion.
Lots of hugging, kissing and spirited conversations filled the Hilton
Garden Inn and the Fairfield Inn in Atlanta Georgia on Memorial Day
weekend.
These alumni were comprised of Panamanian of Afro-West Indian descent, primarily from the Caribbean islands of Jamaica, Barbados and Trinidad. “This is an overly belated event regarding the most fun and productive 36th class reunion in the history of our Canal Zone heritage,” said Miguel Thompson. Despite the obvious, their choice for 2008 presidential selection is split between Senator Hillary R. Clinton and the presumptive Democratic Nominee, Senator Barack H. Obama. An African-American spouse of one alumni commented: “I really enjoyed my time in Atlanta this weekend; I have never experienced such event where everybody knew each other and were happy to see classmates and friends they hadn't seen for 36 years. It was much more fun than I had anticipated.” The Sunday morning Memorial Service was an especially moving event, as many of those present shed tears and responded to the message eloquently delivered by Reverend Verna Simpson-Davis. The reunion was encumbered by neighboring West Indian (Jamaican) Restaurant that served our favorite homeland meals: ackie & saltfish, cow foot soup, stew peas and rice, curry goat, rice and peas with ripe plantain, hug-tail, saril, ginger beer and Irish moss. Although not known as a master of overstatement, I can, unequivocally say that the goals of reuniting and renewing friendships, and even making new ones with classmates, spouses and friends not previously known were beyond the planning committee's fondest expectations. The event was a smashing success, due in part, to the almighty God and the coordinated (spirited) hard work of the entire members of the Executive Committee, as well as the sensational music selections of Reginaldo Bowen, the DJ. We are now looking forward (with great anticipation) to the next upcoming reunion, to be hosted by the class of 1968. This event will be held in Panama on August 1-9, 2008. BE THERE YA’AL!!! CLASS OF 1971 and 1974-1977: WHERE ARE YOU?
