June 23rd is the
22nd birthday of David's Museo
de Historia y Arte José de Obaldía Orejuela and
the place is a totally neglected mess.
As the uproar over a deadly helicopter crash has once again shown, there are plenty of folks who argue that Panama's government is habitually negligent about maintaining everything that it owns. But to many people in Chiriqui, the public property in their province gets an extra dose of neglect because it's far from Panama City, where most of the resources of this country, including those collected elsewhere, tend to be spent. The leaders of Chiriqui's weekly publication Semanario Culturama the Comite Pro-Rescate del Barrio Bolivar neighborhood group and the Fundacion Cultural Gallegos are calling for a protest meeting in front of the museum on the morning of the 23rd. If they have their way, Mr. Cultural Centralism isn't long for this world.
