One reason to live in Panama

Of the many good reasons for people to retire down here, the orchids are both indicators of other things and a reason unto themselves.

That you can have orchids hanging from the rafters of your back porch all year long is one sure sign that you won't freeze to death from high oil prices, and you won't even have to pay any heating bills.

We do have rats down here, and you can race with them if you are so inclined. But the whole notion of "time is money" is foreign to these shores and the failure of someone who has become acclimated to our way of life to take time to appreciate the flowers may be the sign of a deeper disorder --- maybe Plasticine Personality Syndrome or Burger Strip Addiction or Hippiephobia, or something even worse. If you can't appreciate the flowers, seek professional help from a shrink or other attitude adjustment specialist. Life's too short....
