Gorgona beach after a heavy rain

The debris that washes down onto Gorgona's beach with the rains
photos by  Karen Coffey

Yes, there are certain beaches where currents bring all sorts of flotsam from the sea to the shore. But in Gorgona, as is the case with many other Pacific side beaches, the trash comes down the streams into or near which people dump it, out toward the sea and onto the beach. Plastic in particular floats well and doesn't easily degrade.

As these bits of plastic accumulate small pools of water they become breeding grounds for mosquitoes and the diseases they spread. It's also annoying to most tourists and many of the people who live near the beaches.
