a July 12 strike meeting at the University of Panama, the FRENADESO
labor/left umbrella group decided to put off the setting of a date for
a national strike over a list of grievances headed by the rising cost
of living and the lag in workers' pay behind the inflation rate.
FRENADESO leaders Saúl Méndez (of the SUNTRACS
construction workers'
union) and Andrés Rodríguez (of the ASOPROF
teachers' union) told The Panama News that the group plans to consult
with organizations outside of FRENADESO, particularly unions
representing physicians and other health care workers, bus drivers
opposed to the government's plan to reorganize metro area public
transportation, indigenous leaders, environmentalist groups and
community organizations to get them involved before calling a strike. Photo by José F. Ponce
