Sendoff for a popular Canadian ambassador

José Herran-Lima, the third person from the left in the photo above and to the right below, is a career Canadian diplomat and was recently given a send-off luncheon by the Canadian Association of Panama. Having served as Canada's ambassador here from 2005 through the end of June, Herran-Lima will be moving on to Mexico, where he will be coordinating Canada's economic relations with Mexico, Central America and Panama.

As ambassador, Herran-Lima negotiated a bilateral aviation agreement and began the process of talks aimed at a Canada - Panama free trade pact.

Due to a number of factors, Herran-Lima has been here for a substantial growth in Panama's Canadian community. The strengthening of the Canadian dollar against the US dollar, the decisions of many Canadian snowbirds to winter in Latin America rather than the United States, and publicity in Canada about Panama (both published and by word of mouth) have brought us many more Canadian visitors and many of them have decided to stay. This has meant the growth of Canadian community institutions along with the community. Ambassador Herran-Lima paid substantially more attention to local Canadian expats than his predecessors did, and was in turn well received by them.
