Panama's Venezuelans celebrate
their independence day
photos by José F. Ponce

Who speaks for Venezuela in Panama on July 5 could be the stuff of arguments. There are a bunch of Venezuelans who have come here to get away from the present government of their country, and to the extent that Venezuelan residents of Panama cast votes in national elections at the consulate here they tend to vote for the opposition. But the governments of Panama and Venezuela have cordial bilateral relations and on July 5 the Venezuelan government celebrated their nation's existence in a ceremony at the foot of the statue of the greatest Venezuelan of them all, the Great Liberator Simón Bolívar, which is at the center of Plaza Bolivar in the Casco Viejo.
