cultureAlso in this section: Teatro Nacional centennial ![]() Teatro Nacional turns 100 One
of the first things that Panama did with the first money it got from
the Americans for the rights to build and operate the canal was to
build the Teatro Nacional.
The ornate theater with good acoustics was decorated by a number of Panama's best artists, most notably muralist (and diplomat) Roberto Lewis, who did the ceiling. It was opened in 1908. Since then it has been a showcase and incubator for generations of talented Panamanian performers, the most prestigious concert locale for visiting musicians and the scene of many other formal occasions in the nation's life.
