the Electoral Tribunal suppressed
This is not a paid political
ad, or published with the authorization of or in any way at the urging
of any candidate or political party or faction. As a matter of fact The
Panama News has not made and will not make any endorsements in the PRD
primaries. (Which is not to say that the editor has no thoughts about
the subject. Go to this issue's opinion section to see about that.)
This article and its accompanying illustration is about censorship --- the prohibition of the Juan Carlos Navarro for president ad shown above by the Electoral Tribunal, without giving Navarro an opportunity to defend his statement in court. The basis for the ruling was that this news clip with Balbina Herrera's voice and image was used without her permission. You won't find a more disreputable political gang than the four guys who went to court to get this ad pulled off the air. And you won't find a more notorious example of the throwaway value of Balbina Herrera's word than what is quoted in this ad. If this can be banned, what else can be banned? If today the Electoral Tribunal prohibits documentation of a candidate's broken promise, the airing of what other public grievances will be banned tomorrow? That's the issue here: the censorship of political speech, without giving an opportunity for those whose freedoms are abridged to defend their rights. Also in
