this section: ![]() The Spirit of Bliss, by Marta Sánchez Baring My Soul (Exponiendo Mi Alma) Artist Marta Sánchez is known for her activism, specifically the unique use of her artwork, writing, and experiences as a platform to address sexual violence. In the past year, her already deeply personal work has launched beyond the spaces she is most comfortable in. Off the walls of restaurants and community centers, and into a museum in Austria. Out of the context of workshops on the importance of art for healing, and into the center pages of the international magazine “Conspirando.” One of her favorite pieces, “A Continuous Celebration of All Things Wonderful” was catapulted (in it’s digital and print formats) across the United States in an invitation sent by the National Organization for Women. And with this exposure the artist has been left feeling, well… exposed. The title of this show is meant to convey the artist’s openheartedness, and the desire to connect with the viewers. It is also meant to capture the precarious (balancing between scary and exciting) nature of exposure. “Baring My Soul” is an exhibit of her newest work, which reflects this feeling, among others. As introspective as ever, Sánchez shares her thoughts on love, her reflections on home, her attachment to the earth, her deepest fears, her overwhelming hope, and as always, the deep and contageous resilience of a survivor’s voice. For the first time Sánchez will include, as part of her show, a collection of sketches, which walk us through her creative process. Extending beyond the walls of the space, this multi-disciplinary exhibit will also feature a regularly updated video blog, paper lamps, and copies of her new book Beauty Unbalanced, which takes her introspection off the walls and transforms it into imagined stories and retold adventures. “Baring My Soul,” opens November 6, 2008 at 7 p.m. at La Novena Restaurant, on Via Argentina. The exhibit will be on display from November 6 - November 30. To see more of the Marta Sánchez’s work, and to preview her upcoming show, visit: http://www.poetryandart.org Also
