It's a Dog's Life

So you might as well enjoy it

Dalmatian Dilemma

Hi Doctor Mutt,

I have read two books from you: A Dog’s Life and In Dog We Trust, and I’m a very big fan. I just have this problem. I am a human, but my dog Pongo is a Dalmatian and like you know they are hyperactive. So I want to know how to control him. He will not obey. I know he is just six months but I can’t stand him when he bites me or jumps on me so I get dirty. I really want to know how to connect to him so he will obey.

When I bought him, I thought he would be like in the movie 101 Dalmatians. I do really need your advice. Email me as fast as you can, please.

Confused in Bocas Del Toro

Dear Confused,

There’s nothing to be confused about. It seems that every time a doggie movie comes out of Hollywood, the human population falls in love with the “dog of choice” and begins the adoption process. But what they fail to do is to study the character traits of the pups they will bring home, and this can and has been disastrous for both humans and canines alike. However, there is hope for both of you if you are willing and able to work hard to live together.

You must be consistent with Pongo. Don’t give in to his whims, but let him know that you love him when you discipline him. It will seem that there is no end to this process, but actually when you least expect it, Pongo will be an obedient canine. The trick lies in being persistent so don’t be fooled by his obedience, you must NEVER let up, otherwise he will revert to his silly and undisciplined self, and you will be out of your spots on how to get a grip on things.

That is all there is to it. Dalmatians are lively dogs. They love to run and play.

All my best,
