Violence against women brings protesters onto the streets
photos by José F. Ponce

It was one of those officially sanctioned demonstrations, with government VIPs on the dais and many government workers in the crowd, an early observance of the day designated by the United Nations to protest violence against women. But it was about a very real and widespread problem in society, one that tends to be a self-perpetuating cycle, so people who may not have much use for the government or its dignitaries also showed up to add their voices.

Look at the murder rate and you see that the great majority of victims (and perpetrators) are male. Look a bit more closely and you find a large percentage of the perpetrators came from homes terrorized by domestic violence, in which both they and their mothers were the targets.

Domestic violence is a common means of social control, a form of tyranny directed mainly against women. Its toll might be subjectively evaluated in terms of human misery, but it's also quantifiable in terms of lost economic productivity, extra health care costs, more work for the police and courts and many other measures. This physical and psychological damage is now internationally recognized as a cost that societies can't afford to pay and shouldn't have to pay.
