A walk up Ancon Hill
to boost the cause
photos by Eric Jackson

A bit after the scheduled time, a small group started off on the "aerobic" caminata --- up the stairs behind Mi Pueblito, rather than the long way around. This reporter hadn't done this in a couple of years and expected to be gasping for breath more than turned out to be the case. But rather quickly, the sweat came steaming off of this out-of-shape reporter. Others took easier ways up the hill and the crowd multiplied.

Amador off in the distance

A quarter-turn around the hillside, a look through the haze at the city skyline

From up near the top, the Miraflores and Pedro Miguel locks, with the Centennial
Bridge off in the distance and the Balboa - Diablo industrial area in the foreground

Shades of green, food for this national park's wildlife

If these purple things are open, it must be morning...

This one isn't the man-eating variety

Hmmm --- is this the one that can fly up your nose, or
is this the one whose leaves are good for tamales?

Up at the top, a rally to note Ancon Hill's historic and
natural significance, and to renew the park's defense
against developers who would pave it over for a tourist
trap and a subdivision of very expensive residences

The flag that can be seen from much of the city, once again
on The Day of the Martyrs in a symbolic PRD gaffe....

You see, on January 9 the flag is supposed to fly at half-mast, as here at the Legislative
Palace. But the Torrijos administration seems determined to suppress Panama's history
