Between the Dunes at Kitty Hawk

time in a bottle was about to become now,
an improbable reel of beginnings
in herky jerky black and white,
wind and sand unraveling the nature of the day

Daddy, did they all walk that way back then?”
No, sweetheart, that’s old movies of the first recorded flight.”
How did they know how to do it?”
Because nobody paid attention to them.”

flotsam and jetsom bits of December
the kree of gulls
in gambits high above the ground
waves bemoaning tidal passages
upon the shore

two brothers with names torn out of a Sears Catalogue,
Orville and Wilbur, were left alone by people on the go
to stack small castles from pails of sand
when they were small
and grow their dreams when they were tall

feeling the movements of wind around their hand
studying gravity to understand
searching for the point of lift
and suddenly to rise
this day at Kitty Hawk
