The
percussionist behind the beat that's most identifiably Brazilian jazz
(who is usually referred to in conjunction with his wife, singer
Flora Purim), performing in Spanish rather than Portuguese this time.
If you live in Panama or are thinking of it, get to know about
Brazil, for better or worse the up-and-coming regional power whose
economy, for example, could make or break the Panama Canal expansion.
News
from the Caribbean and the Caribbean Diaspora.
A
Spanish-language website, with some English content, by and about the
movement to bring former Bolivian President Gonzalo Sánchez
de
Lozada, now in exile in the United States, to justice for acts of
government violence in September and October of 2003. These events,
in which 60 people died and more than 400 were injured, took place as
"Goni" Sánchez de Lozada moved to suppress
widespread protests that began with opposition to the privatization
sale of public waterworks and water rights to the US-based Bechtel
Corporation, escalated
with an attempt to impose an income tax and became
generalized
throughout the country with the privatization sale of the country's
gas resources to a multinational consortium. The repression also
included the seizure of newspapers and threats against journalists
from both print and broadcast media in an attempt to control coverage
of the events. Goni largely grew up in the United States, speaks
Spanish with an American accent and made a fortune on the Chicago
Commodities Exchange. The Bush administration explicitly, and now
apparently the Obama administration, treated Bolivia's requests for
Sánchez de Lozada's extradition as attempts at political
persecution.
Lord Cobra y los Hermanos Duncan -- Love Letters Panama is, after all, a Caribbean country. A
renowned science fiction writer's preliminary take on the "smart
pills" that are fashionable in some circles.
The
Bocas Breeze -- Panama Surfing in Peril
http://www.thebocasbreeze.com/current-issue/august-agosto-2009-volume.shtml The August 2009 issue of the Bocas Breeze, with a good lead article about some of the threats to surfing conditions in the Bocas del Toro islands. Truth, perspective and relevance are educational issues everywhere --- even for folks like you and me.
