OK --- it's true that most of the people in San Carlos no longer make
their livings by fishing, although many still do. The town has also
lost a portion of its oyster beds to various forms of predation,
without replacing the losses through the creation of new, artificial
ones.
But still, isn't it befitting the ancient economy of San Carlos that its Catholic parish church would have a steeple whose "shingles" are oyster shells? Photo by Eric Jackson Also
