POEMS WRITTEN UNDER A BRIDGE

the best poems are the unread poems
in the dank and mildewed cover
underneath the bridge

it is the place we go
to hide
the grottoed space
for succor
the cove
to bury stolen thought
and mark another kind of flow
as children crawl
below a table unseen

so we go,
beneath the treadmilled path
to odored forms
on walls
and words in shadows,
leaving good and bad advice
to pass along
like heated coals
as epitaph.
