The stand-in headline act

Dee Dee Bridgewater was the announced headline act for this year's Panama Jazz Festival, but she got sick and couldn't make it. So Lizz Wright, a Georgia native  and minister's daughter a few days shy of her 30th birthday, was called to fill in. Hardly anybody in Panama had heard of, let alone heard, this musician.

So what's Danilo Pérez to do for a disappointed audience? He introduced Ms. Wright and, with the rest of the band, walked offstage. Lizz Wright remained and did an a capella rendition of I Wants To Stay Here from Ira Gershwin's Porgy and Bess. She brought the house down. The band came back and with the new headliner played a set that ranged from blues to country to jazz. Hers was a worthy headline act for a Panama Jazz Festival.

The "house band" behind her was known to the festival's regulars --- Danilo Pérez on piano, John Patitucci on bass, Terri Lyne Carrington on drums, Jamey Haddad on percussion and for parts of the set Carlos Garnett on sax and Tom Patitucci on guitar.

Also known to people who caught all of last year's festival was the announced leader of the warm-up act, flamenco guitarist Juanito Pascual y su Nuevo Flamenco. Pascual was as good as expected, but the big treat in that show was the dancing of José Moreno.
