A pretty good month in January

The important statistic is the monthly total under "sites" --- as in "unique sites," or the number of different computers from which someone logged onto The Panama News. That's roughly the number of readers we have --- 62,696 in January.

We publish our download statistics from time to time as a matter of transparency, both for our advertising customers and for anyone else who might like to know. And no, we are not like that guy who claims to be "number one" and has over the years "shown" this with charts that indicate that his website has more unique sites than it does visits. (He also runs an email group that he calls the "largest" of Panama's English-language groups, which it may have been before he took it over and drove everyone away, but now by the amount of traffic it gets rates no higher than fourth place and probably lower than that.)

Of course, that's that pathetic copyright pirate. Many of the "respectable" corporate mainstream media here also tend to lie about the sizes of their audiences or readerships. It's not treated as a crime, the gathering of accurate information by disinterested parties is suppressed and ad agencies steer their clients' advertising dollars on the basis of kickbacks, family relationships and so on, without regard to a business's desire to reach a specific demographic group.

If you feel a need to do business with those who promote every scam that comes along in the expectation that they will be honest with you, that's your choice. If you think that your company's advertising dollar is best spent on making sure that some ad agency executive's teenage kid drives a BMW instead of reaching the potential customers you want, you do have that option.
