And the winner is...

Maureen, from Coronado.

What she won in the raffle conducted by Leslie and Candace Tassell under the watchful eyes of The Panama News was the "Birds and Berries" quilt. It's a soft cotton,  63-inches-wide by 82-inches-long (twin or double bed sized) opus made by five women of the Panama Canal Quilters. It's machine joined but hand-quilted and hand-appliqued.

The photo above is the Tassells putting all of the various tickets into the basket for the drawing, not a reading for the purpose of non-randomly "selecting" the winner. With all of the tickets in the basket and mixed around, it was a matter of the younger Tassell blindly reaching in, grabbing a ticket, and it turned out to be Maureen's.

The Panama Canal Quilters are not a "charitable organization" for the purposes of taxation and governmental regulation, but the $400 or so collected from the quilt raffle is used to support the educations of three girls, aged 11 to 13, who come from families without much money in the rural area of La Chorrera district. The quilters' group covers costs like piano lessons, going to camp during school vacations and some of the school expenses that the government does not cover. The quilters also help out with mentoring for the girls, and require that they keep their grades up to continue receiving support.
