reference is taken off of a Dogpile search. It's an article that was
actually published on May 31.
...and you know what? It was all a lie, woven out of the whole cloth in Don Winner's addled and totalitarian mind, with no basis whatsoever in fact. Okke Ornstein's website has not been taken off line. The whole made-up story was a figment of Don Winner's wishful thinking. However, in an attempt to turn his stormtrooper fantasy about shutting down media he doesn't like into fact, before taking this story off of his website Winner did offer to pay legal expenses of people who bring criminal charges against Okke. During his long campaign in support of convicted and habitual fraud artist and former "Patriot" militia shill Mark Boswell alias Rex Freeman and the latter's failed criminal defamation prosecution against the editor and publisher of The Panama News, he similarly encouraged others to file even more bogus criminal defamation complaints. So what else is new? It's more false propaganda, more flat-out libel, another attack on freedom of the press by Panama's online mouthpiece of swindlers and promoter of totalitarian right-wing ideas within the American community. No correction was forthcoming, nor any apology. That is, another embarrassment for those REPUBLICANS in Panama who have chosen this insufferable little nazi Don Winner as their voice and source of information:  Winner and McCain ... and after this, are there any advertisers who still want to believe what Winner claims about his website's readership figures? You might reasonably ask what this is doing in a news section. The news is by definition not lies, but the lies that get circulated in the community --- and endlessly, by this guy in particular and by right-wing elements in US society in general (including among Americans living abroad) --- are newsworthy. They are newsworthy because smear campaigns, and concerted efforts to suppress freedom of expression, take on lives of their own and in cases like this strike at the heart of freedoms that many take for granted but for which people have fought and died. Der Sturmer was Julius Streicher's Nazi paper, and especially in its early days, it was so flagrantly full of lies big and small that mainstream journalists didn't take it seriously. Millions of deaths later, the prosecutors at Nuremberg took it seriously indeed, and Streicher was convicted of incitement to genocide and hanged. It's a mistake to take the systematic publication of palpable lies, the propagation of totalitarian ideas and attacks on freedom of the press lightly, even when we have our strong disagreements with the targets of such attacks.
