In Spanish they called it "La Marcha de las Putas," the Panama edition of a worldwide protest movement against the violence that men inflict on women. Here there were actually a few prostitutes among the 500 or so men and women who turned out on a rainy day to protest --- prostitution is legal here and those who work by selling sex have their own special complaints about violence in addition to those of all girls and women. Mostly, however, it was a crowd of women who are neither prostitutes nor saints, who don't want to be blamed if they get beaten or raped. It's not that the victims dress like whores or fail to give their attackers due respector any of the other excuses. It's that certain men use violence to control women, and that's a form of slavery that both women and men marched to end.
